PlayTime
PlayTime

PlayTime is a major exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum, curated by Trevor Smith, celebrating the role of play in contemporary art and culture. We designed an exhibition identity, web platform, and printed broadsheet for the project.

The identity contrasts Dada-Tank, a bold, rounded display typeface inspired by the 1932 Czech publication of the same name, with Clarendon Condensed, a sharp serif typeface. The resultant broadside uses both typefaces in a concrete poetry-inspired arrangement.

Launched well in advance of the exhibition opening, the website presents curatorial research, new writing on games and society, and video interviews exploring the shifting role of play in art and culture. An animated field of cards that shuffle upon landing brings an energetic and playful approach to the page, setting an exuberant tone for the magazine-like content that follows.
