Chagall: Love, War and Exile
Chagall: Love, War and Exile, organized by Susan Tumarkin Goodman at The Jewish Museum, New York, examined Chagall’s work produced during his exile in Paris. The exhibition (with exhibition design by Galia Solomonoff) provided a fresh look at an underexamined period of his career. Fragments of Chagall’s poetry accompanied the artworks, which were hung in galleries each painted a different shade of blue, creating a new textual lens through which to read the paintings’ development over time. In the catalogue this rarely seen poetry by Chagall is printed on kraft paper and interspersed throughout the book, providing a warmth that complements the bold color of the work.
